WE SEE THE FUTURE OF FOOD AS CIRCULAR

It seems everyone’s talking about circular economy these days – it’s become a bit of a buzzword. Why does Invenire want to add its voice to the choir that’s singing praises to circularity?

Because we want be involved in creating change in the food system. We think circular economy is something that will benefit food producers and consumers alike, not to mention the environment.

We see the future of food as circular.

WHY CIRCULARITY?

Simply put, circular economy is a smarter approach to the way we produce and consume things. It is an approach that focuses on retaining, recirculating and recreating value within the system as long as possible instead of letting it escape out of the system.

This is worth repeating: the essence of circularity lies in preserving and refining value.

It is a notion that inherently makes sense for most people – why let something go to waste if you can derive value from it or even increase it?

WHAT WE DO IN PRACTICE

We currently have two ongoing large-scale projects on circular food systems.

Modeling a circular food system – pilot case Åland Islands

The aim of this project is to create a transferrable model and tools for increasing circularity within regional food systems. It focuses on developing the role of the food system coordinator, as well as developing the communications on circular food systems. The project is running until the end of 2018.

This project is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

Implementing a circularity-based food industry strategy on Åland Islands

The principles for circularity have already been taken into consideration on the Åland Islands when formulating the regional sustainable food industry strategy in 2016. Since 2017 the emphasis has been on implementing the five focus areas within the strategy: circulation of nutrients, soil health, circular blue bioeconomy, biodiversity and living landscape as well as gastronomic tourism.

This project is funded by the regional government on Åland Islands through Åland primary producers’ coalition.
