WE’RE POWERING UP THRIVING FOOD SYSTEMS

FOOD SYSTEMS COULD BE SO MUCH MORE!

“Fixing the food system” is an expression we’re all familiar with.

But what if we set the target beyond fixing the problems of today, and aimed it at creating truly great food systems? Ones that positively impacted people, communities, business, the environment and society at large? Living food systems that are based on regenerative business?

This is what we’re aiming for. Thriving food systems.

Thriving food systems are –

  • based on long-term values,
  • operating on responsible principles,
  • actualised through smart action areas, and
  • activated by food citizens.

Thriving food systems have the potential to deliver new value & multiple benefits for all. We need you to work with us to create thriving food systems, while helping your own business become future fit.

CIRCULAR & PEOPLE-POWERED

A thriving food system is built on two core principles –

CIRCULAR

A circular model as the core operating structure of the system

In a circular model, no resources are leaked from the food system. Resources are retained within the system, and are re-cycled, re-used or re-purposed.

What does this mean for you?

Resource retainment means finding a use for a resource, instead of letting it go to waste. That creates new business opportunities to retain and refine value from within your business – or expand your business by finding new uses for by-products from your current production.

It’s an opportunity to create new business value using resources that already exist within your business.

PEOPLE-POWERED

People at the core of the system

When people are at the core, the system gets created by people, for people. The needs of people are heard and met, while Eaters actively participate in helping create the system.

What does this mean for you?

This offers opportunity to create a new relationship with consumers. Become a partner to the consumer in their quest to increase conscious consumption.

It’s people who will create the demand for the good things you want to do. And the time is right to activate this –  the 3 Big Shifts are reinventing consumerism around us, and it’s already happening.

SMART ACTION AREAS

Where should you focus your actions when building a thriving food business?

We think thriving food systems are built by focusing on four broad action areas.

SMART PRODUCTION

Making products and services in a way that is better for the environment, people and animals

SMART RECOVERY

Ensuring valuable materials and energy streams are retained within the food system

SMART CONSUMPTION

Enabling stronger consumer involvement in the food system and facilitating responsible consumption

SMART COMMUNITY

Vitalising communities through the food system

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

It could mean focusing on things like –

SMART PRODUCTION
  • Improving resource efficiency
  • Reducing waste & emissions
  • Enabling & facilitating regenerative agriculture
SMART RECOVERY
  • Increased use of recycled nutrients
  • Utilising and commercialising production sidestreams
  • Increasing the use of renewable energy
SMART CONSUMPTION
  • Enabling and facilitating purchase and consumption behaviour changes (food waste, seasonality, increased use of plant-based protein)
  • Solutions and products to enable smart consumption (waste food apps and restaurants, packaging solutions)
  • Strengthening food culture and appreciation of food
SMART COMMUNITY
  • Solutions to enable and facilitate active food citizenship (e.g. CSA, community gardening)
  • Creating and facilitating different circular models in food systems (e.g. agro-ecological symbiosis, eco-industrial parks)
  • Enabling smart community building through governance and administrative structures (e.g. public procurement criteria, subsidies)

FOOD CITIZENSHIP

Food Citizenship offers you the opportunity to change your relationship with the consumer. You can become their partner to them, on their road to becoming food citizens.

This can help make your business future fit for the longterm. The nature of consumerism is changing. Eaters are wanting to play a more active role in the food system, consume more consciously and work closer with producers and food brands.

Food systems do not change by themselves. Change is made by individuals. Behind every organisational structure, process, procedure and decision is a human being. That’s why we need active Food Citizenship. It means food system ownership on a personal level – that the individual feels able and willing to influence and participate in the food system. It means expanding the traditional role of the consumer so that the consumer can also be, for instance, a producer, financer or owner at the same time.

WAYS TO BE A FOOD CITIZEN

It also means adopting a citizenship attitude in various different roles the individual can have – not only as an Eater but also as a professional working within food production (e.g. primary producers or food company & food service professionals), as a facilitator of food production (e.g. retail or logistics professionals) and as a supporter of food production (e.g. researchers, administrators or political decision-makers).

What does this mean for you?

You can be part of creating thriving food systems, starting from within your business of today. It may start from needing resolve a problem within your current business. You may want to improve processes, profitability, your consumer relationship….or perhaps you just want to create something new & revolutionary.

Whatever your goal, even small actions can have a positive impact.
