Why are farmer communities important?

A farmer constantly makes a huge number of decisions.

When to sow? What variety? Do I need more nitrogen? Should I plow the field or leave it uncultivated? Why is this patch drying out more slowly than the other? Where do these weeds come from and what should I do about them?


Many questions can be answered by books, studies, and experts. But one source of information is often the most practical: another farmer who has already tried the same thing on his own field.


Especially when transitioning to regenerative farming, there are many things to which there is no single right answer. Research data tells you what happens on average. Another farmer can tell you what happened in his field. And it is this information that can be very valuable in decision-making.


Peer learning is not just about sharing experiences

A good farming community is not just a Facebook or WhatsApp group where people share pictures of successes and ask for advice on problems. At its best, it is about learning together.


For example, farmers can:

  • share their own experiments and their results

  • discuss failures without the need to justify them

  • compare different approaches

  • to go and see the fields together

  • do small experiments and compare the results

  • ask each other for practical solutions

  • challenge their own assumptions.


For example, in the FAO Farmer Field School model , learning by doing, observing one's own fields and comparing alternative approaches are key. Participants do not just listen to an expert, but observe, discuss and make decisions together.


Why might another farmer be a particularly good teacher?

Farmers do not necessarily need more general information. They need information that will help them make the next decision on their own farms.


The information becomes concrete when another farmer says, for example:

“This only worked for us when we brought the sowing time forward by a week.”

or

“The cover crop didn’t succeed at all in that area because the soil dried out quickly.”

At the same time, you can ask your peer questions that an educator, advisor or researcher might not be able to answer at all: How much work time did this require? What machinery was needed? What would you do differently now? Was the financial benefit really positive?


It's also worth talking about failures

One of the most valuable tasks of a community may be to make failures visible.

It's easy to talk about successes among farmers. But if an experiment fails, it can be harder to talk about it.


Yet, it is precisely from failures that a lot can be learned. If one farmer tries something and openly shares what went wrong, ten others can avoid the same mistake. However, this requires trust. In a good community, there is no need to pretend that everything always works out.


Community can also accelerate innovation

Research has found that farmer networks can influence the adoption of new technologies and farming methods. In a randomized controlled trial published in 2025, a digital farmer-to-farmer discussion group increased the use of legumes and farm-produced fertilizers, for example. The study also found that farmers were able to apply general guidelines to their local situation in the discussions.


Knowledge does not become practice simply because it is available. You also need people with whom you can discuss the matter.


Diversity is a strength in a community

In a good farming community, not everyone has to farm the same way. Quite the opposite.


When the community includes different kinds of farms, soil types, crops, and experiences, there are more opportunities for learning. One farmer may be advanced in soil structure development, another in cover crops, a third in no-till, and a fourth in nutrient management. When these experiences are brought to the same table, one farmer’s experiment can become another farmer’s idea.


The study highlights that farmers learn from both peer networks and broader networks that bring together different actors. The combination of these networks can be particularly important for the emergence of innovations.


You don't have to do everything by yourself

Regenerative farming involves a lot of experimentation. If each farmer tries to figure everything out on their own, learning will be slow and the cost of failure can be high.


In a community, one person can try something and others learn from the experience. Then someone else tries the next thing. Gradually, a shared knowledge of the situation is created that no individual farmer would have had on their own. Perhaps that is why the most important benefit of a community of farmers is not that you can get the answer to every question there.


The biggest benefit comes from having people to ask: “What would you do in this situation?”

Or even better: “Let’s try this together and see what happens!”
