Sustainable Regional Food Systems

2017 – 18

MMM logo.png

Our work on the Edible Insects and the People-Powered Future of Food public projects had expanded our thinking on food system structures. This led us to working on a project funded by the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry to determine a model for how a sustainable, regional food system could be structured.

Key themes and considerations came into play. Future resilience. Self-suffiency. Circular systems & solutions. Local collaborations. Radical ideas. Positive business opportunities. And “people power” – engaging local consumers in their food system by moving them from a passive to an active role through Food Citizenship.

The model created is what we call a thriving food system. A circular, people-powered system where conscious consumption is the norm, all resources are retained and utilised, and everyone contributes equally to the system. This model embodies a regenerative approach – that a food systems could help create positive growth for all it’s stakeholders through how its structured and operates.

Resources

This project is relatively old – new ideas have since emerged and our thinking has evolved. However, you might still find usefulness in the basic ideas. Feel free to explore the outputs of the project in this space.
